The Tale (Tail?) of Moo

On New Year's Eve, we discovered a visitor on our deck, braving the cold temperatures:

This tiny black and white kitten sat on our deck for quite a while. Being a total cat lover, there was no way I was going to let a tiny kitten be out in the cold with no food, etc., so we put some stuff out for it. Predictably, the kitten then became practically a resident of our porch. His favorite thing to do (besides eating...) was sit on the box by our window, curl up and just watch our kitties watching him. (We didn't know it was a boy until a while later, but... it was.) He provided much entertainment during the New Year's party, as we peered at his cuteness out the window. Somewhere along the way, I decided he should be named Moo (for obvious reasons!). It stuck.

I would have loved to try and bring him in from the cold on Day 1, but we had to be really careful not to bring any sickness or fleas, etc. to our cats. So, we figured we would call all the local animal shelters, and look for Missing Cat signs. We didn't find anything. On day 3, Bryon rigged up a Wile E. Coyote-type cat catching - a string tied to the door of the cat carrier, strung in through the window for easy pulling, and some food inside the carrier. It worked like a charm, and we brought him into the nice warm apartment.

We didn't want to freak him out too much, or have him get too close to our cats, so we rigged him up a huge box with food, water, blanket, etc. until we could get him to the vet. By this point, we were searching for a home, hoping to come up with a solid solution other than the animal shelter (not that that would have been awful—they are very, very nice there). Bryon suggested that his parents take the kitten. In fact, Moo is very similar in appearance to their last cat, Shiner, who was also a stray. While we waited for their final decision, we took Moo to the vet. The poor guy had an upper respiratory infection and a wormy belly, both of which required medicine. Happily, he was allowed to be around our cats since they were already vaccinated for the respiratory infection. So began Moo's visit to our apartment.

Despite a strong tendency to hide under things, including getting INSIDE the bottom lining of the couch, Moo finally started to relax a bit, hanging out with the kitties in the living room and playing with toys. After some initial tension, all three kitties got to know each other a bit. Ripley, who'd been the most offended by the presence of the Tiny New Thing, ended up practically adopting him, with Moo following Ripley around and even convincing him to share his favorite chair.

A few days later the time was nearing to transfer Moo to his new home with Bryon's parents. However, we wanted him to make a good impression and all, so D came over and gave him a bath. I kid you not, the kitten never made a peep or swatted at anyone through the entire bath process. He is extremely mellow, even when put in the State Most Hated By Cats Everywhere:

...wet cat. (a.k.a. The Most Pathetic Creature on the Planet.)

Pretty soon after, he did manage to take a run around the bathroom while we were trying to dry him off, running directly through the litterbox and therefore getting super-clumping litter stuck to various bits of fur. I was still snipping bits of it out two days later. Overall he was a really calm kitty.

And darn cute.

Now he's been living at Bryon's parents' house for a couple of weeks. When he first got there, they were going to start him off in the basement. That didn't work, because he just crawled under the bookshelf behind the couch and stayed there for an entire day. Bryon and I went over to unearth him, and then we put him upstairs instead, since it was more similar to the apartment he was used to. They are going to stick with "Moo" (I'm so proud); he is adjusting nicely. The biggest proof? Hours of petting sessions with Bryon's dad, Moo purring the loudest of any cat I've ever heard. They're getting along just fine. :)

Well, that's the Tale (or Tail) of Moo! I'm happy we could help him find a good home in a warm house, with a lot of love.

Pestering

Someone has been pestering me about posting on my blog. I can't imagine who it coulD D.. I mean, be. Can you D-duce the answer??

Anyway, yes, it's been way too long since I've posted. I have a lot of things to write about, but they all involve photos which I have yet to edit (working on it right now). We've had a New Year's Party, holiday visitors both human and feline, and made a few New Year's resolutions (which I think I've pretty much already shattered).

The photo-less stuff:
Visitor #1 - Mike was visiting over his leave from Dec. 15th to Jan. 2. It was a good visit. I was also able to be around for more of this visit, since due to Mary (co-worker) working a Christmas Miracle, I had TEN DAYS OFF IN A ROW.

The Holiday Recap - Oh, let's see. My birthday was fun. I'm officially 3 cubed! After the usual family party at my parents' house, involving THE MOST DELICIOUS CREAM PUFF CAKE, we headed out for our standing meet-up at Applebee's, 10 pm. At first it sounded like no one but Bryon, Mike and I was going to be there since it fell on a Saturday—some friends were leaving to visit family for Christmas—but in the end, it was quite a group. Danielle, Jesse, Sara, Kim, Mike, Donya, Bryon, Maggie and myself, to be precise!

Christmas Eve was spent at Bryon's relatives' house, and was pretty fun. I have to say though, I must have a mental block about last year's Christmas Eve. Apparently we got lost on the way, showed up a little late and missed the group picture, none of which I remember. Not only that, but the door prize gift I brought this year was a rooster teapot—perfectly matching the rooster creamer and sugar bowl I brought last year. I really need to get the ol' memory checked out. Bryon's cousin Laura is going to end up with a full rooster kitchen collection at this rate.

Christmas knitting having furiously been completed (for the most part) the night before (Harumph.), we drove over to my parents' house for a nice, relaxing present-opening. Then it was off to Aunt Lisa's for more presents and the much-loved lasagna dinner. I think we had a very, very nice Christmas. I have an awful tendency to get super-stressed during the Christmas holiday, and I really need to learn to take it in stride (and plan better); in retrospect I only really remember the good parts anyway. Which is as it should be.

For New Year's, we wanted simple, interesting, and dressy (I suppose it's only fair to say, the GIRLS wanted dressy, I'm sure the boys didn't care). So, a large group of us went out to dinner at the Olive Garden, and then we all crashed back at the apartment for a night of Guitar Hero and other entertainment. I think everybody had a good time. I don't know what happened to the times when everyone just crashed where the party was, though; now we always wake up to a mostly-empty apartment. :( I miss touring through the various day-long marathons and vegging with everyone.

Visitor #2 shall be covered in my next post. That needs photos. :D

New Year's Resolutions - I don't know why I make them. They're usually shot pretty quickly. They always involve cleaning more, eating better, cooking real meals, exercising, etc. I *am* making improvements in these areas (I have spaghetti on the stove right now!) but it's always an uphill battle against my innate laziness. :P

The resolutions I've kept so far:

1) Read and weed - Read more of the books that I own but haven't ever read. Then I will be able to better judge if I really want to keep them. This also sort of applies to books that I borrow, as they still need to Get Out Of My House. So far this year I've finished reading The Historian and read Mary Poppins. Now I'm partway into The Last Samurai, which Jesse lent me, oh, over a year ago. Oops. (Not that he cares.) After that it will probably be Gulliver's Travels and Geisha: A Life. Oh, and the Trinity Blood manga. Heh.

2) Start the Christmas knitting in January!!! - I wasn't kidding, people. And it's paying off; Mike's present for next year (by request) is already finished!

3) Pare down, weed out, organize and sort - So far I've weeded out a garbage bag worth of clothes and reorganized my closet. Next up is the craft stuff, I think. I'm also plotting a major stashbusting operation for this year - do I really need FOUR Rubbermaid bins of yarn? I don't think so. It's going well so far, and I have discovered the addictive power of two-color mittens.

Other plans for this year: I am 99% sure we are moving by the end of March. I'd love to be able to say "oh, we bought a house, it's great, etc. etc." but no. Happily our money crunch seems to be easing a bit so maybe we can actually start SAVING money. We are looking for a two-bedroom apartment, as the need for a guest room, if nothing else, was made very clear during Mike's visit. Poor man had to sleep on the couch the whole time, with no privacy and no place to put his stuff. We are pretty darn crammed into this place, nice as it is.

So, that's what's up for 2007. Wish me luck! :D

Welcome to Friday (and to Mike)

A quick recap of the most entertaining parts of last week: On Sunday, I did the local Victorian House Tour with my mom and Aunt Lisa. It was entertaining, although the houses weren't really Victorian. Later, I finished putting up the Christmas decorations at home. I was still feeling like a great big humbug (or at least like it certainly couldn't be time to be thinking about Christmas yet), until Bryon turned on all the Christmas lights, turned off all the others, and put on the classic Bing Crosby Christmas album (a standby in my family's house). Apparently it's just not Christmas to me until ol' Bing makes his appearance. The next Saturday afternoon, Bryon and I drove to Owego to visit Meisha and Dave (friends/co-workers of friends, basically). They have a gorgeous apartment and share many of the same interests, including video games, manga and Magic... the boys played Magic, and Meisha introduced me to the wonders of the Wii—we played tennis, bowling, baseball, and even the doctor game that Dave had previously let me play on the DS. AND... I got to play Guitar Hero and Final Fantasy XII. Talk about your fun visits. All in all Meisha and Dave are really nice people and Bryon and I both had a great time hanging out with them (plus Jesse and Graham).

Yesterday, I had "one of those days." I popped awake at 9:30 (I'm supposed to be at work at 9), I may or may not have smelled vaguely like cat pee (thanks to Ripley peeing on the jeans I'd been planning to wear), and there was no exhaust coming out of my muffler. Fortunately both of the latter issues have now been resolved.

I had a good muffler-repair experience yesterday. First I went to Cole Muffler, who told me that I needed to replace everything after the catalytic converter, to the tune of $465.00. Being that it seemed a bit steep and I really needed to save as much as possible, I asked if I could call around a bit and see if anyone else had the parts in stock. I called Steve's American Lifetime Muffler, and they quoted me $160.00. Installed. Needless to say I zipped right over there. Not only was their price ridiculously low compared to Cole, but they called me before starting work to let me know I didn't need everything replaced, just two pipes. So the grand total including tax, installation and parts was only $145.00. These people are great. Just a little friendly advice to anyone in the area who might need a muffler repair now or in the future.

Anyway... things are getting crazy as we count down to the holidays. Mike will get here around 3 p.m. today, and will be staying until January 2. No word on whether he's staying with us or with Bryon's parents; usually it ends up being a bit of both. The holiday scramble of present-buying, cookie-baking, knitting, and visiting friends is upon us, and at this point I'm just hoping to come out the other side of it unscathed. I'm in serious danger of not getting my major Christmas project done on time, despite having started in August, and I still haven't written my Christmas cards. I will try to get them done tonight so they can go out on Saturday instead of Monday, which I've been told is the Black Friday of the postal world.

Tonight looks to include cleaning... some more cleaning... possibly baking Christmas cookies... and knitting. And hanging out with Mike. Whee! :D

Amusing.

Of clawtips and cookies

Right now it is 1:17 a.m.; Bryon is in bed already, being that he is taking the civil service exam in the morning, but I have a cat on either side of me just watching what I'm doing. (In case you are wondering, Bishop is on the right, and Ripley is on the left in his usual spot on the top shelf of the computer desk.)

Another busy week has come to a close, and the weekend is going to be just as busy. After the exam in the morning, Bryon has a Guard dinner Sat. night (I get to go too). On Sunday I am doing the local Victorian house tour with my mom and aunt. In between these things, we will be putting up our Christmas decorations.

We started the Christmas decorating last night. Basically, we were watching Alton Brown's marvelous christmas cookie episode on Good Eats, and it resulted in us making a trip to Bed Bath & Beyond and Target for a rolling pin and cookie cutters. We got a bit distracted while we were there and ended up buying Christmas lights to replace the dead ones on the deck railing, plus a garland strand to put around the door (they look great!).

Tonight I made Christmas cookies as planned. They came out quite nicely (thanks for the tips, Alton :D) and I even made my own frosting.

What else, what else? Oh yes. Bishop has a new fashion accessory.

Ok, I know I just called them a fashion accessory, but we did NOT buy them to be cutesy. Bishop is a serious scratcher. He claws on furniture, wood and everything else he can get his little paws on. I finally heard about SoftPaws, which are little vinyl claw covers which make it so that his scratching isn't destructive. So far, I am extremely impressed. He got used to them very quickly, and now it's like he doesn't even know they're there. The blue color (yes, they match his collar) makes it easy to tell if all the tips are still on, too. We're not getting them for Ripley (so far) because Ripley only scratches on things he's supposed to, but if we do, I'm sure we'll get red ones for him.

Here's one more photo—sorry it's so blurry, but it illustrates how the claw tips still allow Bishop to retract his claws like normal.

Well, it's off to bed for me, as soon as I finish watching this special on Charles and Diana's wedding.

COR BLIMEY!

Sorry, I've been playing a lot of Dragon Quest VIII the past few days. :D

Thanksgiving went well. We even had people over that evening for Rummikub, which Bryon adores. Friday was a pleasantly relaxing day off, and also involved Rummikub... got to see Kim and Sara, who I don't get to see very often, as well. (Would have been a COMPLETELY fun evening had I not uncharacteristically opened my big mouth and started a conversation down the wrong path...)

Anyway, on Saturday, Bryon, his parents and I visited the Curtiss Museum to see their dollhouses and miniatures exhibit. There was a vendor show that day too, and they also had a special rate for museum admission. It was pretty interesting. I haven't been there for several years. Saturday evening was Jesse's birthday party at Danielle's house. We had a fantastic time—I think we were there until 3 a.m.—and I got to see Kansass (with her marvelous baby news) and Meisha and Meisha's husband Dave, who introduced me to the wonders of the Nintendo DS Lite through the hospital game Trauma Center: Under the Knife (which I swear, is the most fun you can have with a pancreatic tumor!). I was very impressed. The party was a great success. We played DDR (and DS), watched the Magic faceoff between Bryon and Dave, and Bryon and Jesse... ate lots of good food, chatted a lot... it was just great. :D

After that it was a pretty quiet weekend. Bryon's mother had two extra tickets for Hairspray at the theater, and asked if I wanted to go. Not only did my mother and I go and have a fun time, but Bryon's mom gave me the tickets for my birthday! Talk about a nice gift!!

Now I'm just sort of stumbling through the rest of the week, trying to get things done at work and keep on top of everything at home.

Feline update: I ordered some SoftPaws for Bishop (in blue, of course)—little vinyl claw caps to keep him from scratching the heck out of everything. Ripley doesn't need them, because he only scratches on the appropriate toys, etc. Supposedly Bishop won't even know they're there... we'll see how it goes. I hope it works out well. He lovvvvvvvvves to scratch on things, to the detriment of various household items.

I leave you with something amusing that D showed me today:
Cat Haiku (the "elevator-butt" and "Humans are strange" ones especially apply to my cats...)

Almost Thanksgiving

I'm in a pretty chipper mood, excited about seeing family tomorrow. As I mentioned before we're going about it a bit differently this year, but I'm sure it will be fun regardless.

I did some tweaking of the blog layout—a bit more personalization, if you will. It was looking a bit sparse to me. Not sure what I think yet.

Life Lessons Learned From Anime

Bryon and I watched three DVDs' worth of Cromartie High School yesterday (as I was sitting on the couch in sinus misery). That show is pretty hilarious at times, and downright bizarre at others. Still, it has some good points.

Yesterday, the big one that stuck with me was Kamiyama's comment to Maeda about how, if you're going to complain about your work, you should finish it first and THEN complain. *nods gravely* This is very true. And I'm super-guilty of not doing that. So today is dedicated to getting as much done as possible... and quite frankly, if I can get it all done, I won't have anything to complain about. :D

It's pretty sad that I needed the delinquents of Cromartie High School to tell me this.

...

Today I go to the dentist... for a filling. Yuck.

Smackdown

I've been smacked down by a nasty sinus headache for most of today. Welcome to Monday, I guess. I felt AWFUL last night (still want to apologize to Jesse and Danielle for being such a bum) and this morning my head was splitting. It's still not that great right now, and I'm going to take sinus meds again before I go to bed.

In the meantime..
Danielle sent me a link to an AMV, which uses The Killers' "Mr. Brightside" with clips from Final Fantasy X and X-2. Whoever made it (not the poster, apparently) did a really nice job.

Oh yes, I did get my new phone! I even had them change my number to a local area code (my mother is thrilled). It's really entertaining, and will be more so once my micro SD card arrives in the mail so I can put my own songs and pictures on it. The one drawback is, apparently the data cable I bought for it DOES NOT WORK WITH THE PHONE. This is a very common problem, according to the forums on Cingular's website and various other sites. There does not seem to be a fix for it at this time; I'm just glad I have a card reader so I can put things directly onto the SD card... but you better believe that cable's going back to the store. Sheesh.

Well, the kitties are clamoring for dinner, and I think I'm going to read a bit more of The Historian before bed.
